16th August 2010

S. Komatsu regrets to inform all our gluten-intolerant customers that, due to limitations on staff operations, we are currently unable to offer our 100% glutenfree menu, and therefore suspend the service for the foreseeable future. We thank you for your support and understanding.

june20104th June 2010
The Chef's recommendation for this month is seasonal Kamo eggplant (aubergine) and Hamo sea eel, deep fried and accessorised with refreshing daikon radish and agedashi sauce. This is accompanied with tender asparagus and baby corn, both of which are normally ordered separately but this month we are serving up a lavish platter!
Make sure you book earlier to savour these early summer flavours!

3rd June 2010 To all gluten-intolerant or wheat-allergic people in Japan, we have GOOD NEWS!

beerIt has been confirmed that Japan’s Nodogoshi Nama beer, which went on sale on April 6th 2005, is indeed a gluten/wheat-free beer.

In order to avoid high taxes on malt-derived beer and lagers, Japanese beer producers have invested time and money in researching and developing alcoholic beverages that taste like beer or lager but are in fact cleverly made from ingredients other than malt (thus avoiding the high taxes), and have succeeded in creating what has become affectionately known as the inexpensive, great tasting ‘third beer’.

In overseas markets there is already a variety of wheat-free, gluten-free beers available. We personally know of such brands made in Germany, Italy, Australia and America.

However, perhaps due to a lack of high incentive, such as the high taxes of Japan’s market, none of these brands actually hit the mark and taste like a truebeer-like product. On the other hand, Nodogoshi Nama has been embraced by the Japanese nation with such outstanding success that it has been the No. 1 selling beer in its category since its debut 5 years ago!

So, if you are one of those people who longed to enjoy a ‘real beer’ but couldn’t because of a wheat or gluten intolerance, now you can safely enjoy Nodogoshi Nama to your heart’s content!

Ingredients: Hops Sugar Soy Protein Yeast Extract
* None of the ingredients in Nodogoshi Nama are genetically- modified.
Alcohol: 5%
Shelf Life: 9 months

Unfortunately, Nodogoshi Nama is not commercially available outside Japan at the moment. Aside from traveling to Japan or asking others to buy some for you on their travels to Japan, there is no other way of obtaining it. We are currently looking into how we may import it into Australia.

19th April 2010 Turbo grilled in its own shell!

The season of cherry blossoms is almost finished, but it is still the season of delicious shellfish. From April to May, the turbo shellfish is at its best. S. Komatsu prides itself on serving Turbo shellfish in unique style, unlike anywhere else in Japan.

In general, most restaurants that serve turbo shellfish almost always grill it over a charcoal pot with a touch of sake and soy sauce. Whilst this is certainly delicious, S. Komatsu adds a whole new dimension of flair and flavour by grilling it over a charcoal pot with sake and cheese, turning it into an exquisite cheese fondue taste sensation. It has to be tasted to be believed! Make a booking today!

P.S. We can not always guarantee the availability of turbo shellfish, but a prior request made with your booking will certainly secure your chance of being able to savour it.

15th April 2010 Golden Week Trade

As per our recent notice, from April we are, in principal, closed every Sunday and public holiday unless we accept a prior booking for these days. Accordingly, we are due to close over Golden Week, however, for all customers travelling especially to Tokyo or planning a family dinner get -together over the holidays, we will happily consider opening up if you contact us with your booking by April 28th. Happy Golden Week!

07th April 2010

From January 20, 2010 our opening hours changed to allow customers to dine at S.Komatsu on Sundays, and we closed on Mondays instead. However, due to requests from long-term customers who prefer us to open on Mondays we have reverted back to the original opening hours which means we are now closed on Sundays, and public holidays, and are open on Mondays. Having said that, we are happy to open for lunch or dinner on Sunday or public holidays if you give us prior notice. In this case, we will do our best to make all menu courses available, including the Saru no Koku course, regardless of the hour of the day.

Applish Pie the apple pie made without apples!

Applish PieThe pastry is made not, as you would think, from wheat flour, but from rice flour.
The filling feels and tastes like sweetly stewed apple, and yet it is not apple.
Such is the anomaly that is our unique Applish Pie!

It's a totally new dessert sensation.
And it is completely free of preservatives, colourants and other food additives.
How's that for healthy!

But why?

Why go to the trouble to make a scrumptious apple pie, especially devoid of wheat and apple? And if its not apple, what is it?????

Can you guess? Are you up for the Taste-Test Challenge?

If you think you have sharp taste buds then come along, try our Applish Pie and tell us what you think the mystery ingredient is. We look forward to surprising you!

P.S. This dessert is safe and suitable for all persons who have Coeliacs disease, gluten/wheat intolerances or fructose malabsorption difficulties.

20th January 2010

At last we can happily announce that, following in the footsteps of our sister restaurant S. Komatsu - which opened in East Melbourne 3 years ago as the world's first 100% gluten-free, lactose-free and fructose-friendly restaurant - we are now proudly opening a second restaurant in Roppongi, Tokyo. It shares the same venue as our original flagship restaurant, Sushi Komatsu, from which S. Komatsu was conceived as it always had a keen eye on the direction the next generation food culture would be taking.  Only now has the timing been opportune to reap the fruits of Chef Makoto Komatsu's experience in East Melbourne and incorporate them into the flagship venue, under Chef Makoto's careful direction, to reemerge as 'Kenko Bishoku Club S. Komatsu' - a restaurant wholly dedicated to spearheading a healthy next generation food culture.

Our primary reason for spearheading a new food culture is to protect the fundamental pleasure of man to enjoy ‘dining out' with family and friends.  No other species has this principal pleasure.  Yet there are already many people in all societies across the globe who, due to a variety of food intolerances, are no longer able to exercise this fundamental right because dining out on the current food culture makes them unwell.  There has been nowhere in Japan for such people to enjoy dining out safely….until now with the advent of our new restaurant ‘Kenko Bishoku Club S. Komatsu'!  You can be confident that we make everyone's dietary needs our top priority and invite you to dine with peace of mind to your heart's content!

We have taken all the skills and knowledge cultivated over the past 3 years in East Melbourne and invested it into our new restaurant to become Japan's first 100% gluten / wheat free restaurant. So now whenever visiting Tokyo, a person with Coeliac's disease or wheat intolerances - or indeed any person who is interested in healthy eating and wishes (or needs) to avoid certain foods or food preservatives and/or additives – has somewhere safe to dine out! We maintain the same strict policies fostered in East Melbourne in order to ensure absolutely no possibility of cross contamination with gluten or wheat. Please spread the word amongst your family and friends so that all visitors to Tokyo will know where they can dine with absolute peace of mind that their dietary needs are both happily and scrumptiously catered for!

It is unlikely, however, that we will constantly be able to retain staff who are fluent in English. But with this in mind we have put in place a system whereby we can (in most cases) provide English assistance so please do not hesitate to ask for “English please” if required.

Also, our homemade gluten / wheat free bread loaves and other pastries are available on a takeaway (take out) basis, however this service is strictly advance bookings only.

Upon the opening of Kenko Bishoku S. Komatsu, we would like to take the opportunity to invite our patrons to become members of our Club NexGenEats.
